Mainstrasse

Since the 1800s MainStrasse has played a role in Covington’s development. This historically rich area appeals to a variety of residents, tourists, artists and businesses. In fact, many of the residents in MainStrasse are also business owners, working out of their homes, or living above a retail or restaurant space. This charming and cozy neighborhood features unique business and eateries nestled among tree-lined streets, park areas, a community pool, and historic homes, most of the homes were built between the 1840s and 1870s. With urban living on the rise, the proximity to the cities of Cincinnati and Newport helps support a diverse mixture of young professionals, empty nesters, families, and lifelong residents. The area is within walking distance of Devou Park, the Northern Kentucky Convention Center, Paul Brown Stadium and Great American Ballpark. With so many surrounding attractions, MainStrasse has something to offer almost any taste or interest.

MainStrasse is perhaps best known for a five- block area known as the MainStrasse Village. This old German neighborhood was revitalized in 1977 through a $2.5 million federal grant into a German-style village that includes the Sixth Street promenade, the Carroll Chimes Bell Tower and the charming Goose Girl Fountain.

In 1983, MainStrasse was named a National Historic District. Filled with more than 40 businesses, the Village serves as the social and economic center of the neighborhood. The Village plays host to multiple festivals, a farmers market, an antiques market and a multi-block yard sale at various times during the year. Each month, the galleries and businesses open their doors for First Friday; a chance to see new artists’ work and spotlight businesses new and old. This lively and eclectic area draws neighborhood residents and visitors seeking live entertainment, casual or fine dining, a bohemian atmosphere, and a spectacular view of the Cincinnati skyline.

The Village may draw crowds, but it is the residential areas that hold much of this neighborhood’s charm. The sense of community is evident in the care shown by the homeowners; whose homes often boast historical plaques, aging wrought iron, ivy covered walls, or original stained glass windows. The residential streets are filled with single family homes, as condominiums and multi-family homes fill the facades of the previous century. Community members are committed to helping maintain this area through participation in neighborhood clean-ups, sidewalk planters, and neighborhood organizations. MainStrasse boasts two opportunities for involvement, the MainStrasse Village Association and the Residents of MainStrasse Association. These organizations, for businesses and residents respectively, sponsor community events like Maifest, Oktoberfest and The Main Event; helping to bring neighbors closer together, and strengthening the ties between residents and businesses.

With festivals, historic architecture, unique businesses, varying entertainment, exceptional cuisine and the diverse nature of this thriving and vibrant neighborhood offer, most exploring Mainstrasse will agree this is one of Covington’s crown-jewel destinations.
