Architectural Assistance Grant
The Architectural Assistance Grant program is available to assist in the design of rehabilitation of mixed-use buildings in the downtown area. The purpose of the program is to encourage the creation of upper floor residential units in the downtown area.
The maximum grant available is $2,000 which goes toward the fees of a registered architect who provides assistance in solving problems associated with mixed use rehabilitation projects.
Architectural assistance may include:
- Existing floor plans
- Proposed floor plans that meet Kentucky Building Code
- Proposed floor plans that meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation
- Cost estimates for rehabilitation
- Rehabilitation specifications
To be eligible for a grant, a project must meet the following criteria;
- The building must be developed as commercial on the first floor with residential on the upper floors.
- Applicants must own the building or have a minimum 15-year lease or irrevocable purchase option.
- The project must be substantial rehabilitation, defined as a minimum investment of $20,000.
Application Process
The following documentation/procedures are required for an Architectural Assistance Grant request to be considered:
- Submit a completed application for Architectural Assistance Grant.
- Submit an architectural scope of service.
- The Covington Building Inspector will inspect the building, and the Inspector’s report along with a recommendation will be submitted to the Community Development Department for review.
- The Community Development Department will make a recommendation to the City Manager.
- If approved, the grant funds will be drawn on a reimbursement basis. No draw may be requested until specified architectural work is complete, submitted and approved. Applicant must submit architect’s invoices and copies of canceled checks.
